NFL Recap: Houston Texans vs. Carolina Panthers 9:24 - Panthers bring third victory in the third game

Carolina Panthers have retracted the third victory in their third season game. At the Houston Texans, guests sat down with 24: 9. Presumably, the NFC team paid its success but expensive.

Christian McCaffrey (7 ATT, 31 YDS, 2 REC, 9 yds) had to leave the field already in the first half with a thigh injury and did not return. At the beginning of the second half then Jaycee Horn fell out. Cornerback had to be driven into the cabin with a foot injury. According to information of espn Horn broke the foot and should therefore be longer.

Even without the two star players, however, the victory of the Panthers never really was in danger. Guests never returned throughout the encounter.

After a three-and-out of both teams at the beginning of the game, Sam Darnold (23/34, 304 YDS, 8 ATT, 11 YDS, 2 TD) brought the Panthers with a quarterback keeper with an option-play in the first quarter With 7: 0 in front. DJ Moore (8 REC, 126 YDS) had previously brought his team with two big plays to the Red Zone.

The Texans were offensive for a long time. Houston punted at his first four drives, while the hosts also came to just three First Downs. Davis Mills (19/28, 168 YDS, TD, ATT, -1 YDS), who was initially hidden by his team, and his teammates were barely moving the ball.

The fact that the Panthers did not go more clearly in the lead, the team of Head Coach David Culley had to owe an important Fourth-Down-Stop in their own red zone: at a Fourth-and-One, Carolinas left offensive coordinator Joe Brady Chuba Hubbard (11 ATT, 52 YDS, 3 ATT, 27 YDS) running through the center, but the Running Back was stopped without room gain on the line of scrimming.

Only immediately before the break, the Texans came deeper into the opposing half: With her Two-Minute-Drive, Houston Mills fit faster - and the quarterback led his team with several passes on Brandin Cooks (9 REC, 112 YDS) to the End zone. There, the rookie from an empty set found a wide open Anthony Miller (4 REC, 20 YDS, TD). However, Joey Slye (1/1 FG, 0/1 XP) awarded the subsequent extra point, so that the panthers with a 7-6 guide went into the break.

NFL: Sam Darnold provides the preliminary decision with second touchdown

In the second round, the Texans marched to the opposing 39-yard line, but decided on a Fourth-and-Four for a punt. In return Carolina built his lead to 14: 6, Tommy Tremble (REC, 30 YDS, ATT, 7 YDS, TD) carried an endary into the opposing end zone.

After each of a Field Goal on each side, Darnold s second touchdown provided four minutes before the end for the preliminary decision. At a third-and-goal from the one-yard line, Darnold was pushed over the Goalline on a quarterback sneak from his own offensive line. The last drive of the Texans ended in a turnover on downs.

The Panthers meet the Dallas Cowboys in the coming week. The Texans travel to the Buffalo Bills.

Texans vs. Panthers - The most important statistics

Sam Darnold came in the third season game for the second time on at least 300 passing yards - so he is already equal with his previous career high in a season. The Panthers quarterback also scored two Rushing Touchdowns. No player in the NFL has more than Darnold s three Rush-TDS. Panthers flashed around 40 percent of the enemy passing plays - just under ten percent more than in the first season games. And Carolina had success: only one of the four panthers sacks came about without flashing. Carolina won the first three season games for the fifth time in his team history. In the previous four seasons, the Panthers won three times at least eleven games and moved into the playoffs. Only once did the franchise made the playoffs with a 7-9 balance.

The Star of the Game: DJ Moore (Wide Receiver, Panthers)

Moore should make the step from a good receiver to an elite receiver this season. Against the Texans he showed that he has the stuff. Darnold was looking for his best passport receiver from the beginning, seven of the first ten passports went in Moores direction. And: The successful drives of the Panthers ran too much about the 24-year-olds. Moore repeatedly used the free space in the center of Houston s Tampa-2-Defense, providing simple completions. He finished the game with eight catches for 126 yards.

The Flop of the Game: David Culley (Head Coach, Texans)

Davis Mills left no terrible impression on his first start, even because offensive coordinator Tim Kelly enabled the rookie clear reads and simple completions. However, the Texans attacked an infinitely long at their running game at Early Downs, which did not work at all, and weakened his own offense so unnecessary. Culleys was completely incomprehensible decision to punt at the beginning of the second half on a Fourth-and-Four at the opposing 39-yard line. Both a Field Goal and the playing of the downs would have been a significantly better decision.

Analysis: Texans vs. Panthers - The tactical panel

The Texans mostly trusted in the defense on their Tampa 2 coordage with two very low safeties and plenty of room over the middle, often even from their base defense with three liner. Carolina got simple throws over the middle and some good opportunities left Darnold even. The Panthers procured Darnold in the pass games and again a lot of time, even through the frequent use of play action and rollouts. However, the quarterback held the ball several times too long and made two fumbles in the pocket. Darnold was lucky that none of his fumbles led to a turnover. The Panthers were defensively aggressive. Carolina flashed a lot and played the Run aggressive. A tactic that started as the Texans Mills obviously wanted to throw as little as possible. Shortly before the break, however, defensive coordinator Phil Snow changed to a prevent defense and renounced his lightning. Mills immediately played his by far the Best Drive, Houston scored his only touchdown of the game. If you let Mills fit, the Texans quickly put on passing concepts in which the quarterback can get rid of the ball as soon as possible. Mills held the ball much shorter than two seconds in the first half - and well with success. The rookie brought eight his eleven passes in half-time one to the teammate. After the failure of Christian McCaffrey, the Panthers in the backfield predied primarily on Chuba Hubbard. However, the running back was not used as creative in passing game and ran less option Routes than usual McCaffrey. Shortly before playing, Darnold Hubbard sought a route from the backfield into the Flat, the rookie dropped the pass.
